Registering your address is a legal obligation under the Bundesmeldegesetz, but the exact forms, deadlines and accepted documents are set by your municipality. Always check your city's official page before the appointment.

Generally required

A valid passport or national ID card for every person being registered.
The Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, signed by your landlord or the main tenant.This is the written confirmation that you actually moved into the address. Without it most offices cannot register you.
The completed registration form (Anmeldeformular) from your city's website.
Your appointment confirmation, where appointments are required.

Sometimes required

Your rental contract, as supporting evidence in some municipalities.
Marriage certificate or civil-partnership document when registering as a couple.
Birth certificates when registering children.
A written authorisation if someone registers on your behalf.
Translations of foreign civil-status documents, where the office asks for them.

Depending on your situation

Residence title or visa documents, depending on your nationality and status.
Information about religious affiliation, which can affect church tax.
A registration fee in the few cases where one applies — most first registrations are free.
Details of any secondary residence, if you keep more than one address in Germany.

After the appointment

Keep the Meldebescheinigung — the registration confirmation you receive.
Expect your tax ID by post, usually within a few weeks.
Use the confirmation for your bank, employer, insurance and contracts.
Register or update the Rundfunkbeitrag for your household.

Deadlines for registering after a move are set by law and by your municipality. If you are late, register anyway and explain the situation — do not simply stay unregistered.
