German applications reward structure and completeness. Expectations differ between industries and between international and local employers, so read each job advert carefully.

Before applying

Read the advert and note the required qualifications, language level and start date.
Check whether your qualification needs recognition for this role.
Research the employer: size, location, products, working language.
Decide the application language — German unless the advert is clearly in English.

Lebenslauf (CV)

One to two pages, reverse chronological, clean and consistent formatting.
Contact details, work experience with month and year, education, skills, languages with levels.
Explain gaps briefly and honestly rather than hiding them.
A photo is optional and never required.Many employers still expect one, but leaving it out is entirely acceptable.
Save as PDF with a clear file name, for example Lebenslauf_Surname.pdf.

Anschreiben (cover letter), when required

One page, written for this one job, not a template.
Name the position and where you found it in the first lines.
Connect two or three concrete achievements to the requirements in the advert.
State your earliest start date, and salary expectation only if asked.

Zeugnisse (certificates and references)

Collect school, university and vocational certificates.
Collect employer references from previous jobs where you have them.
Add language certificates and relevant course confirmations.
Add recognition documents if your qualification was assessed in Germany.
Provide translations only where the employer asks for them.

Submitting the application

Follow the requested channel exactly: portal, email or online form.
Send one merged PDF when applying by email, unless told otherwise.
Use a short, professional email text and a clear subject line.
Keep a record of where and when you applied.

Bewerbungsgespräch (interview) preparation

Be on time — a few minutes early is the norm.
Prepare a two-minute summary of your background.
Prepare examples with concrete results rather than general statements.
Prepare your own questions about the team, tasks and working hours.
Know a realistic salary range for the role and region.
Test the technology in advance for video interviews.

After the interview

Send a short thank-you email within a day.
Ask politely about the timeline if you hear nothing after the agreed date.
Read any contract offer fully: hours, probation period, notice period, holiday, place of work.
Never sign on the spot if you still have open questions.
